Chapter 3: How to apply image templates from Creative Factory

Updated over 2 weeks ago

You can apply image templates to your ads directly from Creative Factory.

This allows you to assign templates at scale without editing ads one by one.

Template application flow

To apply a template to your ads:

  1. Select the template you want to use.

  2. Click Apply in the bottom-right corner of the template card.

  3. Choose the channel where you want to apply the template (Meta or Snapchat).

  4. Select the virtual account you want to work with.

  5. You’ll then see a list of all eligible Dynamic ads for the selected channel.

  6. Select one or more ads where you want to apply the template, then click the blue Apply Template button.

To find the right ads faster, you can filter and search by:

  • Ad name or ID

  • Ad account

  • Campaign or ad set

  • Currently applied template

This makes it easy to apply the same template across multiple campaigns or markets.

Control how templates look across placements

To give you full control over how your creatives appear across placements, templates are applied using dedicated aspect-ratio slots.

This prevents platforms from automatically cropping or adapting images in ways that could affect your visual quality.

Meta placements: three template slots

For Meta ads, templates are applied using three independent slots:

  • 1:1 (Square): The standard format for many placements.

  • 4:5 (Vertical feed): Optimized for mobile feeds and stories on Facebook and Instagram.

  • 9:16 (Full portrait): Essential for rapidly growing full-screen placements like Stories and Reels.

Note: In the bulk apply flow, these three slots are always visible at the top of the screen.

Tip: Use the bulk select checkbox to speed up multi ad selection, especially when you are applying the same template across multiple campaigns or markets.

Automatic slot validation

To keep your setup valid and consistent, the system performs a few automatic checks:

  • Unified 4:5 templates

When you use a 4:5 template in the 1:1 slot, the same template is automatically applied to the 4:5 slot. This ensures visual consistency and follows best practices when using vertical creatives as the primary source.

  • Auto-filling empty slots

In some cases, your ad might have the 4:5 template in 1:1 slot and the "4:5 creative" active, but no specific template selected for the 4:5 slot.

If you then apply a 9:16 template, the system automatically fills the 4:5 slot by copying the 4:5 template currently used in the 1:1 slot. This prevents ads from running with an active 4:5 placement but no assigned template.

Bulk apply behavior

The bulk apply flow follows a what-you-see-is-what-you-get approach. In the bulk apply view, the three aspect-ratio slots are always visible at the top of the screen.

You can also use the bulk select checkbox to quickly select multiple ads - especially when applying the same template across campaigns or markets.

Each slot can be in one of two states:

  1. A template is selected
If you select a template for a slot (for example a 9:16 template for the 9:16 slot), that exact template will be used for the corresponding placement.

  2. A slot is left empty
If you leave a slot empty, Creative Factory takes a protective action: Image Touch Ups are automatically turned off for that aspect ratio

Why do we do this?

By turning off Image Touch Ups, we prevent Meta from attempting to automatically adapt, crop, or zoom your image to fit a slot you left empty. This ensures that your creative is not manipulated in unexpected ways.

Catalog limits and automatic cleanup

Each catalog can contain up to 20 templates.

If you want to apply new templates but the catalog has reached its limit, Creative Factory will help you make space. When the limit is reached, a modal appears showing pre-selected templates that are suitable for disconnection. Next to each template, you’ll see a small label indicating its usage.

You choose which templates to disconnect and can immediately continue applying the new templates.

Note: Nothing happens automatically - the system only pre-select templates but the final decision is always yours.

Which templates are suggested for disconnection?

A template is suggested for disconnection if:

  • It is applied to paused ads, and

  • those ads have not been created or edited in the last 7 days.

This makes it easy to keep launching and testing new creatives without having to manually clean up templates.

How templates are organized in the modal

To help you make a safe decision, templates are grouped into two categories:

1. Suggested to disconnect (pre-selected)

Templates applied only to paused ads that haven’t been created or edited in the last 7 days.

2. Active or recently applied

This group includes:

  • Templates currently running on active ads

  • Templates applied to paused ads that were created or edited within the last 7 days

Good to know

  • Your work is safe: Disconnected templates stay in your library.

  • No broken ads: If a paused ad with a disconnected template is reactivated, it will display the original main catalog image.

Applying templates to Snapchat ads

For Snapchat, you can apply 1:1 or 9:16 templates, including support for Domino-style Collection Ads.

The flow adapts based on the selected template:

  • Selecting a 9:16 template shows ads eligible for Story or Single Image formats

  • Selecting a 1:1 template shows ads eligible for Collection formats

This ensures that only compatible ads are shown during template application.
