Image Touch Ups

Meta's transition from Adapt to Placement

Updated over 4 months ago

Meta made changes to original "Adapt to Placement feature" This article will help you understand what to expect from these changes.

  1. Adapt to Placement is becoming Image Touch Ups

  2. This feature changes Mobile Feeds to 4:5 format and Facebook Reels and Facebook Stories to 9:16

    1. Instagram Stories are a grid of 1:1 images and Instagram Reels are grid of 4:5 images

  3. It allows users to decide how default images are adapted to these new formats

  4. It is ON by default for all previously created ads

UPDATE NOV 12: The Meta roll out is currently at roughly 50% and expected to be complete by 18th November. ROI Hunter developed in-platform UI that allows you to control how your images behave in ads. You can find it in your Ads Editor under Creative Enhancements section.

How to fix Poor Cropping

For advertisers who use ONLY 1:1 templates

In ROI Hunter:

  • Click Edit Ad

  • Double check Adapt to placement is off, ads created recently in Ads Manager might be opted-in

  • save again.

    • This explicitly turns off Adapt to Placement / Image Touch Ups and reverts to 1:1 only

In Ads Manager:

  • Turn Off Image Touch Ups in every ad. You can find it under “Advantage+ Creative” settings. This has to be done manually

  • This will revert the look to 1:1 only (Except IG Reels)

For advertisers who use 4:5 templates

The default behavior is now to prioritize 4:5 format, so this is a good situation.
Nevertheless, customers may still want to decide how is 4:5 template cropped for 1:1 placements (like IG Stories, Desktop Feed, Audience Network etc)In Ads Manager:

In ROI Hunter:

  • Go to your Ad editor and Check “Image Fit Options” under Creative Enhancements

    • this decides how your 4:5 formats are being changed to 1:1 placement

    • Select “Zoom” = this will ensure that full square template will be fit into 1:1 placement with trimming out top and bottom.

  • Keep “Fit images to 4:5 placements” ON

In Ads Manager:

  • Go to Image Touch Ups. You can find it under “Advantage+ Creative” settings. Keep it ON

  • Check “Image Fit” options

    • this decides how your 4:5 formats are being changed to 1:1 placement

    • Select “Zoom” = this will ensure that full square template will be fit into 1:1 placement with trimming out top and bottom.

  • Keep “Fit images to 4:5 placements” ON

  • Decide if you want to use 9:16 template using the “Fit images to 9:16 placements”

For advertisers who use 1:1 templates and 9:16 through Adapt to Placement

In ROI Hunter:

  • Go to your Ad editor and Check “Image Fit” options under Creative Enhancements

  • Uncheck “Prefer aspect ration 4:5”

    • this reverts Feed placements to 1:1 (not IG Reels!)

  • Keep “Fit images to 9:16 placements” ON

    • this retains current behavior - first 9:16 template is used on FB Stories and Reels

  • Check “Image Fit” options

    • this decides how your 1:1 formats are being changed in non 1:1 placement (notably IG Reels)

    • Select “Crop” = this will ensure that full square template will be fit into 4:5 placement without any trimming - a color bar will be added at top and bottom

In Ads Manager:

  • Go to Image Touch Ups. You can find it under “Advantage+ Creative” settings. Keep it ON

  • Navigate to “Show more settings” and uncheck “Fit images to 4:5 placements”

    • this reverts Feed placements to 1:1 (not IG Reels!)

  • Keep “Fit images to 9:16 placements” ON

    • this retains current behavior - first 9:16 template is used on FB Stories and Reels

  • Check “Image Fit” options

    • this decides how your 1:1 formats are being changed in non 1:1 placement (notably IG Reels)

    • Select “Crop” = this will ensure that full square template will be fit into 4:5 placement without any trimming - a color bar will be added at top and bottom
