Chapter 3: What are the SMART segments and when to use them

Updated over 3 months ago

What are SMART segments?

SMART segments are ROI Hunter’s best practices turned into ready-made product segments.

They’re a self-optimising alternative to manual performance segments (like Bestsellers or Poor Performers). Built on our ROI Hunter best practices, they save you setup time, give you a reliable baseline, and are the recommended starting point for Segment Prioritisation if your goal is performance (ROAS/ACOS).

For any issues with SMART segments see: 🛠️

Why use SMART Segments?

  • No setup, no upkeep → no need to create or maintain filters.

  • Self-optimised → adapt automatically as product performance changes.

  • Proven baseline → built on ROI Hunter’s best practices and Meta’s recommendations.

  • Faster start → launch strategies right away without manual segment work.

Types of SMART segments

TOP PERFORMERS ⭐️

~20–40% of products that drive ROAS and deliver strong signals (revenue, conversions, traffic, product attributes), but only receive ~20–40% of spend share on the given market.

Example:

POOR PERFORMERS ⭐️

~Products responsible for ~15% of the least profitable spend in the market.

Requirements for SMART Segments

SMART Segments are only available in markets with solid data health. This ensures the algorithm has enough reliable data to produce meaningful results.

Your market must meet all of the following conditions:

  • In the last 21 days:

    • At least 100 active products

    • At least €1,000 (or equivalent) in Meta DPA spend

    • At least €10,000 (or equivalent) in product revenue from all traffic

    • No data health metric below 65% (red) in the Dynamic Ads Overview

  • Product detail views (PDV) tracked and available in ROI Hunter with match rate above 65%

What to do:

  • Check if your market meets all of the above.

  • If it does and SMART Segments are still missing, contact support.

How SMART Segments fit into your SP strategy

If your main goal is ROAS/ACOS:

  • Use SMART Top Performers in the Boost section to give more visibility to products that already work well but don’t get enough budget.

  • Use SMART Poor Performers in the Reduce section to limit spend on items that consume budget but don’t convert.

  • You can combine SMART Segments with strategic business segments (e.g. seasonal, high-margin, flagship products) depending on your goals.

⚠️ IMPORTANT ⚠️

Never combine SMART Segments with manual performance segments (e.g. Bestsellers, Poor Performers). Choose one or the other.

SMART Segments are meant to replace custom performance segments, not complement them. If you use both at the same time, the same products may appear in multiple segments, which leads to duplication and weaker results.
